Ahh~ this shoujo smell. I haven't felt it in a million years.
Although I guess not only Japanese manga prefer this a bit silly female character, with a little bit of everything, but she's mostly kind, doesn't grab, not particularly smart etc. Silly cutie. Not my favorite type of character. To be honest I actually fail to realize for what exactly male lead fell in love with with female lead. To me it mostly felt like - well, his feelings deepened during their adventure and later it felt like someone used the switch, his character opened the love and openess about love 100%. Funny thing why I call 'shoujo' is that before that he basically couldn't realize his own feelings for quite some time, like his heart is beating faster etc. For him it was quite understandable though, because of who he is and that he never loved he had time to recognize it, but it was still hella funny. The downside of it all was that he became quite clingy and a bit a greasiness showed up, thus I shaved the rating. I understand that it's his bloodline, but hey. On the contrary when it came to romancing actually Meng Xian herself was bickering and was embarrassed, so he came as more active. Well, it's true anyway. But the thing is that their interactions were the same time and time again and it became less sweet but more annoying ngl.
The story starts with Meng Xian (or Meng Yuan, I don't know Chinese, mtl translates both) travels through the book and becomes a cannon fodder, but not only, she travels at a pretty bad timing where just few moments and she will be fed the gu worm and will lose herself by becoming a puppet. Knowing a little of the plot she shouts into darkness that she knows where the fire that Si Zhou needs is. Si Zhou is a character of unknown origins and is considered a male second in the story. While viewers find him astonishing and devoted, Meng Xian doesn't share this opinion. To her the character who cheated out of something even the heroine of the story must not be a good guy. Even at this moment in the book, he watched the second female lead, Meng Xian, being dragged and fed the worm, but he didn't do anything. Only sharing the info from the book saved her life. What I didn't like is how she used this moment as an argument later and author either forgot or she was too stupid to remember that before her passing what Si Zhuo knew was the original, annoying and spoiled Meng Xian, a daughter of a big figure in their sect, she grew up pampered, so when the man she liked brought a woman and treated her special of course she acted as a demon. So Si Zhuo's impression started to change only later when he realized that Meng Xian stayed true to her word, forgetting the hero and calmed down. Because Si Zhuo, who pretends to be a sheep to eat the tiger, still couldn't fully trust her (understandably), he put a drop of poison in her body at first, so she won't be able to escape his control. After all the fire she talked about is a magic thingy that should help him heal. The thing is Si Zhuo isn't a cultivator, others treat him as half-demon, but he's of pure demon blood (winged snakes). He was hurt before and needed help to change it.
Thus the two of them (actually four but they separate later) go on adventure finding the fire fruit he needs. Meng Xian, although angry at his domineering action, so far had to put away her anger and follow. While she was thinking how they'll separate, Si Zhuo already made trouble and they were thrown into a different place in the demon world. While Meng Xian whose cultivation is low was fidgetting that she doesn't want to get hurt, Si Zhuo again creates troubles, while they're on the run. But even if he devoured the fire, but it was of no help. Though he brought thunder and destroyed quite a bit of land. Next the went to another place with a secret realm to find abother treasure. On the way there were things like meeting again with ML and FL of the novel, also meeting monster animals contracted to Si Zhuo, stumbling across another two. While Si Zhuo realized he passed another level and went to seclusion here is where novel's ML, the goody two-shoes intervened, thinking that his junior sister should not be with a demon race, so he advised her father to let her meet blind dates. Why I say this is that I see him meddling around, it's hypocritical how he can have a relationship and she doesn't mind now, but he minds and meddles in her relationship without going into things. And although the relationship between her and Si Zhuo changed a bit, it wasn't love at her side. She treated him well and obeyed since he was her golden thigh, without him she'd be gone, so she treated him saving her as like his part (I think she overestimated her worth tbh, if he didn't care she'd be tossed aside in a second). While he had changes in his heart, by her honesty (since she never cheated him of anything), kindness in the moment of need. Something like that. Anyway, from the silent and a bit complacent guy he slowly turns into a pasionate one. But she does not welcome it. She once mentioned in argument that she watched her in the cave almost being fed the gu (it wasn't her back then, but she forgot that her Meng Xian was an annoying eyesore before). She thought being on the blind date is okay, she doesn't like the other person and is okay with such settings, simply because of her past and she doesn't want to be hurt. Now, mentioning her past. Her parents divorced, but no one wanted the oil bottle, so she stayed with her grandma, she lived basically in poverty with a tight belt all the time. When grandma died she was basically cheated of the apartment, since she was only a high schooler, after she passed out because of hunger she threatened her parents for alimony. This is her life, studying, working part-time all year round, oblivious to relationships (not that she doesn't recognize signals, but she's like afraid of it), so she comes to this realm after an accident and she feels like hitting jackpot a bit, but circumstances don't allow her. Even her cultivation improved because of several battles (but as any silly bean she can't understand cultivation while reading, so she advanced through practice, by accident I'd say). Anyway when Si Zhuo confessed she refused, since when he saved her she considered this as a deal between the two, after all she always thought that what stayed in her body was a poison blood, not knowing he changed to heart blood at some point. He always acted on his own initiative without her choice, so this made her mad. But she actually had a change of heart pretty fast I'd say, right after he saved her again, but this was after their showdown and now he didn't need to, but still saved her as he promised not to give up. She realized that unlike others, he will always think of her safety first, he will surely save her if he can, so their dynamic changed after that. Especially when they were thrown into the underworld and Si Zhuo was wounded and needed to recuperate, he basically protected her till the end even in most dengareous moment. So when he woke up she proposed from dating, but to Si Zhuo, who is quite cunning I'd say, saying this and being almost a step away from being taoist companions is the same. Which they end up doing of course, but after the entire rollecoaster adventure.
The storyline through mtl was a bit of a mess to me to fully understand who is who, but basic outline should be like this. The upper realm is closed, no one in their world can ascend. But the legend and the left bloodline say that the upper realm exists, it's where immortals and mosnters went. Here our protagonists stumble upon what should be called a conspiracy, someone experiments to open the road of God and open the gate to ascension, but they do it through rough means. Why I say messy is because there are people in black, those who fed gu worms before and who also have something to do with resurrection of the emperor (basically some overpowering demon). Yet there were also people who tried to use/experiment with the bloodline (someone like Si Zhuo) these are demon bloodlines left in this world. But in general it's all about opening the door to ascension. Which is nothing new. I also would like to note that sometimes the description of characters came once too often and all those similar descriptions didn't help. At least in the beginning where Si Zhuo was described to change clothes too many times, in later parts author barely mentioned their attire, only sometimes, but at least at those times it made sense, not just a simple 'beautiful in this, beautiful in that' type of description, but instead highlight her worth or in what she likes to see him, smth more meaningful.
Ah yeah, one last thing, the ending. I must say that although it was directed at making you cry, but at the same time it lacked logic why Si Zhuo would make it this far. As if.. you've been crashing ppl left and right, don't tell me there was no other way than to completely get rid off those hidden baddies through a formation, but also sacrifice yourself. Oops, yeah that's a major spoiler. But whatever. Don't worry it's all good, like always. The aim was to ascend~
Last, last thing, I couldn't care less about those spirit animals, I think they did very little for the story, especially since they were cubs, they basically jumped around and ate. But also damn they kinda rubbed me the wrong way too with their attitude sometimes.
Not particularly outstanding one, especially when it comes to the Meng Xian type of character, I mean her silliness. But it wasn't that bad. RATE: 3/5.
