I don't even know how to call it, should it be a comedic adventure or anti classic adventure movie, because main characters are not meant for any travel and are simply involved in search for treasure accidentally. They could have skipped the adventure part, if it was not for that spark of interest that still stayed in Loretta Sage's heart.
Loretta Sage (Bullock) is on the verge of ending her career as a romance novelist, she published numerous books about adventuring couple where probably she wanted to let the image of herself and her late husband stay forever. She is made to go through an event for her latest and last book where Alan a.k.a. Dash on the book covers (Channing Tatum) got more attention from the audience and she feels like reaching the end. They have a pretty bad parting with Alan, she considers him nothing but a bunch of handsome muscles, but to him she's a bit intimidating due to her intelligence. Quite interesting contrast of a mean girl and a bit softer guy. Feeling bad about saying inappropriate words Alan follows Loretta outside where he witnessed her kidnapping by an eccentric billionaire Abigail Fairfax (Radcliffe) who knows that her books are not only books, but they are based on true history and she and her late husband know the language he needs to find the tomb. She's "invited" to the island still wearing that shining costume she wore for her book event.
Meanwhile knowing that asking police at this point will bear nothing, Alan decided to call for his instructor Jack Trainer (Pitt) who will help him save Loretta. Awesome but very short episodic role for Pitt, but the fight was great, because cool action was interspersed by Tatum's awkward presence that tried to do at least something but was out of place.
The movie is full of such instances where something cool should have happened, but we have two people not ready for any action or adventure, so lots of slapstick action or awkward silly moments.
Like my favorite will still stay the chair escape. Let's admit it was fun.
"Excuse me. Would it be possible to remove me from the chair?""No time."
We're running with the shadows of the night~♪
Because it is so nonsense, this is why it's funny.Although we say goodbye to Jack Trainer, the following car escape is still funny, so many bad guys following. I'm surprised there are so many roads for undeveloped island, but let's skip this part. Good thing this island is not without.. islanders :'D So their decision was to cut through the jungle and find help. But who told Loretta to keep that piece of text with her and who told the movie to let her find the wall with the same piece of text, but it was a full version.
The escape from the jungle is almost successful, if it wasn't for Fairfax's persistence. During the dance with Alan, when Loretta heard the lyrics she asked what they meant and realized that the part in the text was an actual place, with this knowledge they were taken back, not without a funny fight. No really, the "Final Countdown" playing as a BGM was epic, although the fight was a slapstick fight :D
But the final part where they find the tomb and realize that the red crown isn't the one filled with red diamonds, but with rare red shells that belong to this island, the symbol of love and care. Although it's a lovely and romantic, but not what Fairfax was looking for.
Bad news, the vulcano is active, Fairfax is enraged, they are left in this forgotten place before they realize that the only way is through water. Together they're rushed into the sea.
What a wonderful finale. They're saved, they're together.
It's completely not serious, but when it comes to adventure it is still interesting, when it comes to comedy it's funny, when it comes to romance it's actually fine to have such uncoventional couple of a romance novelist and a male cover model.
The movie really didn't take itself serious. But it still managed to be quite fabulous.
Of course not the entire humor was up my alley, because I could do without the naked bum. Is it like homage to Tatum's role he became famous for or not, but I felt like it was. But I'm sure many ladies were glued to it.
