Summary: (mpreg) Jiang Li is suddenly reborn on the cruise ship he had five years ago, the day he drank spiked water and had a thrist with Huo Mudong for two days. Huo Mudong misunderstood him as being sent by a rival company, so he dismissed him with a check in his previous life, but what Jiang Li did not expect getting from this passionate moment was a cute little daughter Duoduo, his little padded jacket, his little sweetheart. But now that he is back and is again under the influence of medicine, but he also has his own pride, he walked out, but then with little clarity realized that with no Mudong there will be no Duoduo, so for the sake of his little girl he returned. He had no idea that their relationship will develop into something more.
I must say there were several places that rubbed me the wrong way, but let's talk about shining points first.
Jiang Li is not a dodder flower and not a complete queen, he is kind but has a strong will. He was adopted when he was a baby few months old and I don't care about speaking in spoilers, because he was actually bought from traffickers, this cliche setting resurfaces later in the novel. So when his adoptive parents got their own child his status in the family plumetted as you can guess, very common story of child abuse and blood sucking from relatives who don't treat you as relatives. In previous life due to face Jiang Li indeed paid off the "upbringing" costs, but any sane person knows that its' parents' responsibility to bring up their kids, now something that requires a payback. But he did it and eventually broke off the relationship with his adoptive parents due to his condition, after all he had no idea he was pregnant, penniless he had nowhere to go and only the doctor took good care of him as he was a rare case too. This allowed him to eventually grow and later achieve financial freedom.
Now he could rely on himself, pay for himself and be self-reliant, you could see that he is a kind person but if he decides on something he is pretty stubborn.
The other good part is later relationship when Huo Mudong decides to be serious about Jiang Li and build a future with him, then he really takes serious measures to show what he is capable of.
The storyline is very simple. They meet on a cruise ship, for conceiving Duoduo Jiang Li stays with Mudong and becomes lovers. They stay together. Jiang Li works in the Internet/game company, Mudong also owns internet copmany, both collaborate. Jiang Li develops feelings, but is told down by Mudong. Later Jiang Li finlly conceives and leaves Mudong.
Parallel to that we heard from adoptive Jiang family from time to time, but nothing new, just acting disgustingly, guirding against Jiang Li everywhere. Jiang Li also stops to support them and lives alone.
Mudong chases Jiang Li around and comes out to his family who don't accept the boy. Mudong wants to prove himself and that Jiang Li is also excellent, by this time Jiang Li resigned from previous company and changed to what he did in the past life - drawing. he collaborated on the new game using a vest. Mudong's father divested and now it was him against others. Riding the wave after advertising new game things got better and the rushed to success. Mudong also finds that Jiang Li is pregnant, after all now seeing sincirety from Mudong, Jiang Li couldn't help but confess and want a full family. Of course Mudong is happy.
Here Mudong finds out that Jiang Li might be abducted and tries to help him find clues. He also waeved a net for Jiang father who always wanted to get rich overnight trading stocks after knowing their deeds against Jiang Li. Jiang Li indeed found his loving parents, they may not be some big shots, but they're really good. But for adoptive Jiang things did not go as good. First stocks, later it spread that they bought children from traffickers and their reputations plummetted.
While our family now reunited Jiang Li could feel himself protected, Jiang Li's mom could handle old Mr Huo like no one else. And story ends with Jiang Li giving birth and giving Mudong a status and confessing love. I honestly thought he'd confess about his rebirth, was so serious.
Now the things that rubbed me the wrong way. Except that this is.. a pretty basic story tbh, there is nothing new, like abusive adoptive parents, uneven status in the relationship, happy finding biological parents, some family drama although the style is quite peaceful.
But the biggest pet peeve, three pet peeves of this story were the way Huo Mudong was so stubborn on them just having a fling with no future (no balls to admit you can be something more), his parents did not accept Jiang Li and Jiang Li misunderstanding Huo Mudong several times (more like misinterpreting him and making his own mind, wrongly) and later not giving him a status for a long time.
Let's start with the first one and why I think it felt wrong.
When Huo Mudong and Jiang Li start their relationship he has a bad impression of Jiang Li because he was plotted against and he was given medicine, so he thought he comes from the rival company like a spy. Later it was cleared, but Huo Mudong still insisted on underground relationship. This part in my opinion was portrayed really badly, like yes he said it several times that for the sake of business and such it was obvious for him to marry a person of similar status, but you don't really see anything behind that one phrase, some sort of backstory from which such conviction comes from, so you feel really bad about his character at first. Soon you know he has a change of feelings, but again there is a long emphasis that he can't give him status as a marriage partner. Jiang Li actually fell in love with Huo Mudong at some point, because he treated him really well despite saying such harsh words and it was really misleading. Eventually Huo Mudong accepted that he loves Jiang Li and wants to be together, but Jiang Li who was quite disappointed abided by the agreement, break-up with no fuss. It was Huo Mudong who made fuss now, but by this time Jiang Li got pregnant and Huo Mudong's role became mediocre. You can call the next part chasing wife to the crematorium, but also a redemption arc. Huo Mudong started to act more openly in his pursuit, he also came out to his parents, made the company his own completely and worked hard to work, so he proved to be worthy of giving it a try, but the probation period lasted till Duoduo was born. Jiang Li had enough of dominated the CEO.
The second one is Huo's family attitude. Why I didn't get it is because you know the structure of the family. The eldest one is not cut out for business and is also a playboy, second sister married out and also wasn't good at it, Huo Mudong was the most promising, but I truly don't get why make him bend, just because he's the most outstanding? While for example the eldest has a story where he paid astronomical sum of money to a star to abort the child she suddenly had, he was notorious playboy. They all said at the beginning with great fanfare that "in a family like ours". In real wealthy families they might as well marry like that and Huo family is indeed wealthy, but you know what is funny? You don't know the scope of their wealth actually. I've finished the novel and I had no feeling of wealthy family at all (at least describe me some villas and cars). The only plausible reason given later is that their own Huo family has many other members and relationships are tricky, what would it look like if Mudong will come out with male lover, someone has to inherit the family... but from another point of course you want your son not to be alone and have kids, but it's not like you can speculate on future and be so sure. And also why you insist on Mudong having a kid while you still have two eldest. They don't feel the same pressure just because you consider them not quilified? Rubbed me the wrong way. And Mr Huo indeed was stubborn till the very end and ran as fast as he could only when he heard that he had a grandchild. It's good that Jiang Li's mom was found at this time and she is a firecracker so she gave Mr Huo so much face that he would never forget.
Third and least, but sometimes at the beginning Jiang Li really misinterpreted Mudong's facial impressions a lot. Like he has such a dark face he must hate me.. are you for real? At other times thought Mudong will use pressure or his position to submit. Did not have a high opinion of Mudong's character I guess. And also at the end when he kept hanging Huo Mudong who already groveled around after feeling guilty for his previous actions.
Anyway, rubbed me the wrong way the feel it gave me, thus I couldn't completely enjoy it.
