AKIRA is larger than anything. A true classic of anime in every sense. I re-watch it from time to time just to re-visit it and marvel at everything, at wonderful and gripping story, amazing animation and overall superior work of art.
When it comes to AKIRA it's the story you can explore and discuss, it revolves around many themes that feel modern even if it was released so many years ago. It also offers great visuals that you can marvel at decades later. This what makes anime a great one and a legend. If I had descendant I'd say - watch this :)
I'm on Katsuhiro Ootomo roll right now, we start with Steamboy, now Akira and later Roujon Z, finishing with several selected shorter animations. I think it's a pity Katsuhiro did not release more, but I also understand that after Akira it was pretty hard to impress the public and meet exectations (although I think it's unfair towards any creator), even though I find his other works great too, especially those which are more humorous. He has so much to say when it comes to incorporations of technologies and innovations, the social impact, which can be found in many of his stories.
