I watched the Director's cut.
Do you have a feeling like you know the movie but then you look up the director and get surprised that you watched other stuff by them, but it may be totally different? This is a director of The Crow, which obviously shows I think.
I find this story fascinating. With John Murdock as protagonist waking up and not having a clue who he is and why there is a woman's dead body, he only has few items on him that can show him the way to uncover the truth about himselfand about this city.
It's fascinating because just a year after this in 1999 The Matrix will come to screens and sweep the world with a theme of false world, humanity living in illusion and there is only one person who can turn the tides. Dark City on the other hand did not reach the heights. But it doesn't make it less interesting.
The world of Dark City is pretty stylish. It's always dark, for a reason, it follows the 50's style with neo-noir sprinkle, the special effects may not be that great, but they're interesting and innovative for sure, especially when the city changed its' face (if I saw this movie back then I'd be so impressed).
John stumbles around realizing he finds himself in a loop, the city that never sees the sunlight, why everyone falls asleep at midnight and who are these stylish bald menacing guys in black coats.
I like that this movie plays hard on the theme of memories. What if your memories are false? Will you change if you are implanted with false memories? What about your loved ones?
So yeah, it's great that I finally watched it. I liked that it's different. The only thing that are outdated are special effects, but what can you expect from a movie that was released in '98. Otherwise it looked really like something right from 50's, art of pulp fiction oh and that artists who drew the painting about the diner at night.. forgot the name.
RATE: 8/10.
