This happened to be quite a disappointment. Again a novel by 且拂, like several previous reviews. But this happened to be a disappointment.
Synopsis: Xie Mingze is a transmigrator. He travels to this world where original Xie Mingze should have become a noble person, someone who will step hand in hand with the Crown Prince and become one who will be beyond one person and above everyone else. But this story had a bug, a reborn half-sister, who stole opportunities from others, but she plotted against her half-brother and sent him to celebrate unconscious Ninth Prince, Chu Li. Framing him up all the way. This was supposed to be a reborn heroine, but Xie Mingze who arrived wanted to he-tue, spit on her. The new Xie Mingze has amazing medical skills that are far ahead of this era, but he also knows Chinese medicine. But he haven't arrived alone, he also has a system that releases the main task - to fulfill the wish of original owner and other daily tasks that end up fixing the buggy plot.
This review will contain spoilers, since I don't think it's worth the time to read it I might even encourage you to read them.
The plot starts from the wedding day, XMZ arrives and is faced with trouble, he's weak and can't resist, so he bargains with the system for some health points otherwise forget the tasks and this world, he already died. Thus he gets points and can threaten his way and his deceased mother's dowry and leaves beautifully to become Ninth Prince's concubine. Here starts his hourney and relationship with ML, Chu Li.
Note: About health points. The system releases daily tasks, they're random, or special tasks. They all have rewards as health points. Each day XMZ consumes health points to continue before completing the plot. Daily tasks include taking care of his husband.
I understand that it's a personal preference, but I don't like when hosts arrive with a system that releases tasks. Some readers might find it fun, but I find it a bit of a stumble for me believing the relationship that will develop betweem MCs and MLs. This novel is an avid example of what I dislike about such plots. Because MC HAS to take care of Chu Li, he looks at Chu Li as his future HP ATM, but Chu Li's pov is different, he finds himself being more and more interested in his newly appointed wife. And this is my main problem, the ML is hooked, when MC is not.
But this relationship continues, when XMZ arrived CL was poisoned, unconscious and had broken legs. So XMZ dealt with these things stage by stage under the guise of a miracle doctor. Everyone waited to hear CL's sad news, but instead everyone marveled that Ninth Prince woke up, could move and then walk.
Meanwhile XMZ, who got his mother's dowry, did not need to be financially restrained. He also read daily plots about Xie YuJiao, the half-sister, and later took action to prevent XYJ from succeeding in what she planned. Like he spoilt the moment of XYJ conspiracy to be saved by prince from drowning, instead she was helped by "adopted" son (illegitimate son). Later XMZ intercepted protective beads that would help alleviate Princess health problem and this will connect another girl to their house. Bit by bit he chipped off some chance encounters and made XYJ desperate, he also took care of spreading the Xie family scandals to the world. While he and Chu Li enjoyed the growing fame of the Ninth Prince.
Sounds not bad, but here is why I thought the story was not my thing:
- I don't like the MC. Although sometimes you hear him say or do stuff like - I can't leave this person, I must save them - but medical skill is just a tool in this plot and not the main tool. At first it did matter, for examle he had to heal Chu Li, our ML. Next he helped one of the royal princesses, which was a big favor and advance for CL's reputation. Next he also helped with plague, which again serves the reputation. But when these things ended it became more of a palace drama plot and we forget that he's a doctor tbh, since we're occupied by other stuff. So thus it's not about going out working as a doctor, it's mainly using your skills when needed, but not at other times. MC also sometimes acts a bit arrogant about his skills and you often hear a phrase like "others can't do it, but he can". He felt conceited at times. Also I felt silly at author's description when every operation is like 2 hours, tops.
- The novel seems long for its' content, it felt a bit mulling at times, by the end of it I wasn't exciting I felt like finally it was over and I could let it go. The plot itself is weird. For example, firstly we start counter-attack XYJ, but later XMZ doesn't do anything about her and the supposed to be big villan half-sister is treated like a jumping clown, so she's completely out of focus for quite some time, with sheer confidence that things will work out XMZ doesn't even bother (though I didn't have that blind confidence from overall situation at that time). Later it became more of a palace drama, with the story revolving around several main characters of the royal family. Like we figure out that Chu Li's brother, who he often protected, is not as innocent as he shows. I think his name is Chu Peng, I already forgot (they always just called him Crown Prince). This Crown Prince used his relationship to either use Chu Li as a shield or use him when needed. But Chu Li who now has his wife to protect refused to continue to be exploited. Several conspiracies played against both crown prince and the second prince. Crown prince was used by their emperor father o be nothing more but a puppet, since he did not want to release the power. He came to power also in a dirty way. This conspiracy is uncovered much later when XMZ and CL save a woman from emperor's prison. She shared her side of story and the biggest secret of what happened to Chu Li's moter and why his father hated him so much. As it happened the previous queen had a sweetheart, another king, but since the emperor plays conspiracy to usurp the throne he also made her his queen, she lived without love. But then a tragedy happened, he captured her sweetheart and accused him as a rebel, the queen did not believe it, she helped her first love, but they were caught, in anger she said that her child was not from the emperor, so emperor, despite things being overwise, believed it. So next generation did not know the truth about rebellion. This woman who told these secrets was from Hu tribe, she had blue eyes, she was caught by the emperor and was held captive for all these years. Her son tried to assassinate emperor several times but failed. In the end thanks to prince from the enemy country, which was helped by XYJ to create the image of immortal who graced the earth, emperor fell victim to a simple plot of feeding him poison as a drink to immortality. In the end all those foes were defeated by our power couple.
Tbh by the end of it I still felt lackluster about the relationship. As I said it's hard for me to belive in a relationship that develops one-sidedly and then another side acts as if they woke up to feelings. But of course it's a HE, XMZ who wanted to leave at first of course stayed with the man he fell in love with.
Don't know, I was not satisfied overall. There were too many places I wanted to question. But I'm too lazy to do so, it feels like not worth it.
